Green Day Gets Third Number 1 in the U.S., Tops Six Charts Total; Barry Gibb Only Makes 63

by VVN Music

Green Day returns to the top of the U.S. Albums chart for the first time in seven years with Revolution Radio.

This is the third time the band has topped the charts after American Idiot in 2004 and 21st Century Breakdown in 2009. Green Day's last three albums, all released within three months of each other, peaked at 2 (¡Uno!), 9 (¡Dos!) and 13 (¡TrĂ©!).

Revolution Radio also tops the Album Sales, Digital Albums, Tastmaker Albums, Rock Albums and Alternative Albums charts.

Swedish metal band Meshuggah score their fourth straight top twenty album in the U.S. with The Violent Sleep of Reason. All eight of their studio albums have charted in this country but the last four have had the best performance.
  • Catch Thirtythree (2005 / #12)
  • obZen (2008 / #16)
  • Koloss (2012 / #12)
  • The Violent Sleep of Reason (2016 / #17)
Phish have their lowest charting studio album since 2002 with Big Boat which debuts at 19.  In that year, their Round Room only went to 46, a major disappointment after three straight top twelve albums. They came back in 2004 with Undermind (#13) followed by Joy (2009 / #13) and Fuego (2014 / #7).

The premier of Melissa Etheridge's Memphis Rock and Soul is a bit of a disappointment (it's a great album) with a number 34 start which is, like Phish, lower than her last three studio releases (Fearless Love (2010 / #7), 4th Street Feeling (2012 / #18) and This is M.E. (2014 / #21). Memphis Rock and Soul does debut at number 1 on the Blues Albums.

Veteran punk rockers NOFX open at 54 with First Ditch Effort, their lowest studio effort since 2000. Still, all of their albums throughout this time have been in a fairly tight band on the charts (The War on Errorism / 2003 / #44), Wolves in Wolves Clothing (2006 / #46), Coaster (2009 / #36), Self Entitled (2012 / #42).

The last veteran artist debut is the biggest disappointment of a rather poor week as Barry Gibb only manages 63 with In the Now.  Gibb opened at number 2 in the U.K. earlier this week and a better debut was certainly expected here in the U.S.

Only his second solo album, he actually did better than 1984's Now Voyager which went to 72; however, with the amount of publicity behind the album and the Bee Gees legacy and tragedies over the last decade, there were high hopes for In the Now
