5th Dimension Have All of Their Singles Compiled on New 3-CD Set

by VVN Music

While relegated now to oldies radio, the 5th Dimension were huge hitmakers during the late 60's and early 70's with twelve top twenty hits that crossed over to an even stronger following in Adult Contemporary radio.

Made up of Billy Davis, Jr., Florence LaRue, Marilyn McCoo, Lamonte McLemore, and Ron Townson, they performed what was referred to as "champagne soul", combining soul with pop for a smooth sound that appealed across all age groups.

They had their first hit in 1966 with a cover of the Mamas and the Papas Go Where You Wanna Go but their biggest break came a year later when they recorded Jim Webb's Up, Up and Away. Not only was the song their first top ten hit, but it went on to win the Grammys for Record of the Year for the group and Song of the Year for Webb.

For the next five years, it was rare that the 5th Dimension didn't have a record on the radio, going to number 1 with Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In from Hair along with a string of songs from Laura Nyro including Sweet Blindness, Wedding Bell Blues, Blowing Away and Save the Country.

On December 23, Real Gone Music will release The Complete Soul City/Bell Singles 1966-1975 which collects all of the group's singles, A and B sides, over three CDs.

Among the B sides, there are a number of songs included here that were not on 5th Dimension albums and are making their CD debut. Also note that, while the majority of the album is formatted A-side/B-side, there are a couple of cases where a B-side is not included; however, three times during their career, they duplicated songs on the flip side of their hits. It'll Never Be the Same Again was on the B-side of both California Soul and The Girl's Song; A Love Like Ours was the flip of both Puppet Man and Never My Love; and The Singer backed both Love's Lines, Angels and Lines and Ashes to Ashes.

They also had one double sided hit with The Declaration b/w A Change Is Gonna Come/People Gotta Be Free.
