by Paul Cashmere, Noise11

Preston Hubbard, the bass player for Austin Texas band the Fabulous Thunderbirds from 1985-1993 has died at the age of 63.

Hubbard played one Fabulous Thunderbirds best known songs ‘Tuff Enough’ and ‘Powerful Stuff’ but after leaving the band fell on hard times, including a stint in jail.

Two years ago he was admitted to a St Louis hospital, near death, the results of years of alcohol and drug abuse.

Hubbard was 14 years old when he started to play bass and 17 when he left home to join his first band Room Full of Blues, the band that originally backed the Blues Brothers.

Muddy Waters introduced Hubbard to The Fabulous Thunderbirds and it was Jimmie Vaughan who invited him to join the band.

Hubbard has also played for Bonnie Raitt, Etta James, Albert Collins and The Vaughan Brothers.

Antones, the iconic venue where Stevie Ray Vaughan and the Fabulous Thunderbirds got their start, have paid tribute to Hubbard with his name in lights tonight.
