Paul Simon Hits Number 1 in the U.K.; Dexys, The Monkees, Roxette & Budgie All Hit Multi-Decade Highs

by VVN Music

For the first time since the week of April 11, 1990, Paul Simon has the number 1 album in Britain with a studio set.

Stranger to Stranger has become Simon's fourth number 1 solo studio album after Paul Simon (1972), Graceland (1986) and The Rhythm of the Saints (1990). He also hit number one with Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water (1970) and, last year, with the compilation The Ultimate Collection.

Simon told the Official Chart Company "I don't know a recording artist who wouldn't be elated to have a Number 1 album. A big thank you to everyone who thought enough of the music to go out and buy it. I hope it stands up to multiple listens."

At 10 is the new album from the former Dexys Midnight Runners, now known as Dexys. Let the Record Show: Dexys Do Irish and Country Soul is the group's fifth studio album and the first to go this high in Britain since 1982's Too-Rye-Ay.

The Monkees start at number 29 with Good Times! and, like both Simon and Dexys, it is their best in decades...49 years to be exact. Not only is it their highest charting studio album since 1967's Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd., it's their first studio album to even chart in the U.K. since that time. The band has had five compilations chart since that time, Hey Hey It's the Monkees: Greatest Hits (1989 / #12), The Greatest Hits (1997 / #15), The Definitive Monkees (2001 / #15), The Very Best of the Monkees (2006 / #84) and I'm a Believer: The Best of the Monkees (2012 / #84).

Roxette's tenth studio album, Good Karma, premiers at 61, giving them their best showing in the U.K. since 1999 and Have a Nice Day (#28). Their last three albums all peaked below number 100.

Finally, at 76 is The MCA Albums 1973-1975 by Budgie. It's their first album to chart in the U.K. since 1982's Deliver Us From Evil.
