Radiohead Debuts at 3, Keith Urban at 4 in the U.S.; Veteran Artist Tops Hot 100 For First Time in 16 Years

by VVN Music

Radiohead wasn't able to duplicate their chart topping performance from the U.K. here in the U.S. with their new album A Moon Shaped Pool as Drake and Beyonce go 1-2 for another week, leaving the British band at number 3.

A Moon Shaped Pool should have a good run on the charts as, so far, it is only out on digital sites with CD and vinyl not being available until next month. The number 3 start equals the 2011 performance of their last album, The King of Limbs. This is their sixth straight album to go top three in the U.S.

One step down at number 4 is the premier of Keith Urban's Ripcord, his tenth studio album in 25 years. This is his sixth straight album to make the top ten on the Top 200. It is also his fifth number 1 country album.

The Goo Goo Dolls open at 27 with their latest album, Boxes. It is the worst chart performance for the band in 21 years, back to 1995's A Boy Named Goo which also peaked at 27. Of their five albums between the two releases, four went to the top ten.

At 29 is Cyndi Lauper's new country covers album, Detour. While the album starts three spots lower than her last release, 2010's Memphis Blues, it is still the fourth highest charting album of her career:
  1. She's So Unusual (1983 / #4)
  2. True Colors (1986 / #4)
  3. Memphis Blues (2010 / #26)
  4. Detour (2016 / #29)
  5. A Night to Remember (1989 / #37)
  6. At Last (2003 / #38)
  7. Bring Ya To the Brink (2008 / #41)
  8. Twelve Deadly Cyns...and Then Some (1994 / #81)
  9. Hat Full of Stars (1993 / #112)
  10. The Body Acoustic (2005 / #112)
  11. Sisters of Avalon (1996 / #188)
Mary Chapin Carpenter starts at 102 with The Things That We Are Made Of, her lowest charting non-holiday studio album in 27 years. Since her 1989 album State of the Heart went to 183, she has had ten sets hit the top 100 until her latest.

At 140 is the deluxe edition of Ryan Adam's 2000 album Heartbreaker, giving him a new high for the set.

The Rides, made up of Stephen Stills, Barry Goldberg and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, debut at 152 with Pierced Arrow. Their debut, 2013's Can't Get Enough, went to number 39.

Justin Timberlake tops the Hot 100 with Can't Stop the Feeling! This is Timberlake's twentieth year as a recording artist and his ascension to the top is the first time a veteran artist has been at the top of the Hot 100 in almost sixteen years, since the last week that Santana was at number one on June 10, 2000 with Maria Maria

Note that artists like Maria Carey have topped the chart in recent years; however, it was before they had reached the twenty year mark for the release of their first recording. Timberlake and N'Sync released their first single in 1996.
