Paul Simon wrote The Sound of Silence in 1963 and 1964 and first recording it for Simon & Garfunkel’s debut album Wednesday Morning 3AM. The album was released in October 1964 and was originally a commercial failure but started to gather airplay in 1965 which led to a remix with electric instruments and a re-release in September 1965. Second time around it went to number 1 on the Billboard chart in January 1966.

Disturbed performed the song on Conan on March 28, 2016.
