Vintage Video: Ringo Starr Guest Stars on Rowan & Martin's Laugh In (1970)

46 years ago tonight (February 23, 1970), Ringo Starr was the guest star on NBC's Rowan and Martin's Laugh In.

It was a tough time in Starr's life. The Beatles were falling apart. John Lennon had quit the band in September of 1969 and, less than two months after this appearance, Paul McCartney also quit. At the same time, Ringo and Paul were in a feud over release dates for Let It Be, McCartney and Ringo's debut solo album, Sentimental Journey. When all was said and done, McCartney was released on April 17 in the U.K. and April 20 in the U.S. while Ringo's album came out March 27 in the U.K. but April 24 in the U.S. Let It Be hit stores in May.

Ringo's appearance on Laugh In was a big deal at the time as it was the first TV appearance by a Beatle during the time of the breakup. He was in the midst of promoting his new movie, The Magic Christian, which may be the reason he refers to himself on the show as Peter Sellers, who was the co-star of the film.
