Elton John Debuts at Number 8 on the U.S. Albums Chart, Lowest in a Decade

Elton John's new album, Wonderful Crazy Night, debuts at number 8 this week on the U.S. Albums chart, the lowest for any of his studio albums in a decade.

To be fair, this is only his fourth studio album in that time. In 2006, he released The Captain & the Kid which only peaked at 18 but his next two, The Union (2010 / #3) with Leon Russell and The Diving Board (2013 / #4) fared better.

Wonderful Crazy Night is Elton John's 32nd studio album. Half of them made the U.S. top ten and, between 1972 and 1975, he had six straight number ones.

Lucinda Williams opens at 36 with The Ghosts of Highway 20.  Like Elton John, it has been over a decade since she had a studio album not make the top twenty, back to 2001's Essence which peaked at 28. Since then, she has had West (2007 / #14), Little Honey (2008 / #9), Blessed (2011 / #15) and Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone (2014 / #13).

Another in the NOW series, NOW That's What I Call Power Ballads, starts at 51. The album contains all those big, bombastic slow songs by the likes of Boston, Journey, KISS, Mr. Big, Cheap Trick and more.

At 80 is SWV's Still, their fifth studio album since 1992 and, by far their lowest charting:
  • It's About Time (1992 / #8)
  • New Beginning (1996 / #9)
  • Release Some Tension (1997 / #24)
  • I Missed Us (2012 / #25)
  • Still (2016 / #80)
Finally, the Cult fail to break into the top 100 albums in the U.S. for the first time since their 1984 debut, Dreamtime. Their new album, Hidden City, debuts at 153, breaking a string of eight top 100 sets. Their last album, 2012's Choice of Weapon, went to 36 while 1989's Sonic Temple was their best charting album, reaching number 10 in the U.S.

Last week's top album by a veteran artist, Dream Theater's The Astonishing, takes a huge fall from 11 to 126.
