Don McLean Arrested For Domestic Violence

Don McLean has been arrested in Camden, Maine for alleged domestic violence.

Police were called to the 70-year-old singer-songwriter's home early Monday morning and placed him under arrest although they have not given details on the incident other than the victim did not require hospitalization.

According to Maine law, for a charge of domestic violence, the victim must be either a partner or a member of the household.

Local authorities say that, besides a speeding ticket, this is the first incident of any type for McLean.

The singer was taken to the Knox County Jail where he posted a $10,000 bond and was released. He will next appear in court in Rockland, Maine on February 22.

McLean's popularity first peaked in the early-70's with the classic American Pie (1971 / #1) along with Vincent (1972 / #12), Dreidel (1973 / #21) and Castles in the Air which was from his first album but didn't become a minor hit until the 80's. He also wrote and recorded And I Love You So which went on to be a hit for Perry Como.

His career had a resurgence in 1980 with a cover of Roy Orbison's Crying (1980 / #5 Pop / #2 AC / #6 Country).
