  • 1954 - Clyde McPhatter recorded with the Drifters for the last time.
  • 1962 - James Brown performed at the Apollo Theater in New York. The show was recorded and went on to be considered one of the greatest live albums ever made.
  • 1964 - The Rolling Stones opened a 12-date American Tour at the New York Academy of Music.
  • 1973 - John Lennon sued the U.S. government, claiming that they were tapping his telephone.
  • 1974 - The film Stardust, starring David Bowie, premiered in London.
  • 1977 - Keith Richards plead guilty to heroin possession in Toronto, receiving a suspended sentence and an order to perform a charity concert for the blind.
  • 1977 - Filming began on The Buddy Holly Story starring Gary Busey.
  • 1979 - Paul McCartney received a rhodium medallion from the Guinness Book of World Records for being the most successful composer of all-time.
  • 1988 - The trial of Fantasy Records vs. John Fogerty opens. The litigation is over Fantasy's claim that Fogerty's solo song The Old Man Down the Road was too much like the CCR song Run Through the Jungle.
  • 1989 - It was announced that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would be inducting the Who, Simon & Garfunkel, the Platters, the Kinks, Hank Ballard, Bobby Darin, the Four Seasons, the Four Tops Holland, Dozier and Holland and Carole King and Gerry Goffin.
  • 1993 - Duran Duran is forced to cancel their upcoming tour when Simon LeBon tears a vocal chord.
  • 1995 - It was Tony Bennett Day in New York City.
  • 1996 - Barry Gordy received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
  • 1998 - Ian Brown of the Stone Temple Roses received a four-month prison sentence after an outbreak on a flight from Paris to New York.
