Passings: Bryn Merrick of the Damned (1958 - 2015)

Bryn Merrick, who played with the Damned between 1983 and 1989, has lost his battle with cancer at the age of 56. Bryn died on Saturday in Llandough Hospital near Cardiff, Wales.

Andy Johnson, who was a bandmate in the Ramones' cover band The Sharmones, said on Facebook:
On behalf of his daughter, Ella, and sons, Richard and Christian, it is with so much sadness that I announce that my best friend, Bryn Merrick, passed away peacefully this morning after a long battle with cancer at Llandough Hospital near Cardiff.
Merrick was originally a member of the Cardiff punk band Victimize before joining the Damned in 1983, replacing Paul Gray who moved on to UFO. Bryn made his first appearance with the band on the BBC television show The Young Ones and appeared on the band's biggest album, Phantasmagoria (1985 / #11 U.K.), and Anything (1986 / #40). He also played on their biggest single, Eloise (1986 / #3 U.K.). While the band started to record a new album in 1987, but they lost their contract with MCA and the band went on hiatus in 1989.

Merrick played with the Sharmones for five years until earlier this year, touring as Bee Bee Sharmone.

According to Noise11, "In a bizarre twist of fate, Merrick met [Paul] Gray, the man he replaced [in the Damned] weeks ago in the cancer ward where they were both being treated."
