Don Henley Dishes on Former Eagles Members Don Felder, Bernie Leaden and Randy Meisner

The Eagles will open their History of the Eagles Tour on Saturday night in Louisville, KY and one former member will be included while another almost made the trek.

Don Henley spoke with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal on a variety of subjects including his current relationship with three former band members.

As we reported back in April, Bernie Leadon is on the tour and, if not for an unfortunate accident, Randy Meisner might also had come along. "Bernie Leadon is definitely on this tour. Randy Meisner, if he were healthy and willing, might have been included, too, but his current health will not permit. We are all wishing him well."

Meisner's situation was first reported on April 3 by Rusty Young of Poco who wrote on the Poco website:

Some of you may have heard that Randy Meisner is in a California hospital and you're concerned. I just talked to his wife Lana and want to give you guys the latest. Randy was at home when something he was eating obstructed his breathing and he lost consciousness. Lana rushed him to the emergency room where he got immediate care.

Things are going to be a little rough for Randy for a while, but his doctors are optimistic he’ll recover from this incident. If you can, say a little prayer or just send love Randy’s way.

Rusty
Don Felder is an entirely different matter.  When asked about a moment in the recent Eagles documentary when Felder almost came to tears talking about his dismissal from the band. Henley commented "Well, that was a poignant moment, for sure — if it was real — but since Mr. Felder continues to engage in legal action, of one kind or another, against us, I can't really say anything further about it."

Henley also commented that this might be the last hurrah for the Eagles. "...by the time we get through this tour, it'll be 2015 and we'll all be in our late 60s. It's been an incredible experience for all of us, but it may be time to say adios and bow out gracefully."

There is much more at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal.

Actually, it's the other way around. Don Felder is nothing without the Eagles.

Tell Don Henley, Don Felders great

hotel california, the eagles biggest hit and DON FELDER created the tune in his head minus the lyrics. isnt that worth half the royalties? for his troubles he was fired. lol

Anonymous said...

Actually Felder only contributed a cord progression that was subsequently developed. Without Henleys & Frey contributions and mastery of lyrics , it would have remained another underdeveloped cord progression. Felder was very lucky in this aspect.

That's 'Chord' as in music...not 'cord' as in piece of thick string...

They should do one more album after the tour and make it count. Record it like it would be played on top 40 in the 70s. Or at least from that spirit, instead of the elder statesman spirit.

Don Henley is a douchebag! That is all!

Anonymous said...

And that chord progression in Hotel California is the same chords Jerhro Tull used in the song "We Used to Know"...... So hmmmm Felder was the guy who ripped it off. Interestingly enough The Eagles used to open concerts for Jethro Tull so the heard Tull play this song quite a few times before deciding to steal it...,

Brian said...

Late 60s? C'mon, Don, you guys are pikers next to Mick, Kieth, and Sir Paul!

Anonymous said...

To the uninformed "anonymous" above, first of all Ian Anderson has said it was not "ripped off. If you know anything about music, you would know that there are numerous famous songs that have the same chord progressions. Secondly, when the The Eagles opened for Jethro Tull, is was in their early days around 1971 or 1972. Don Felder was living on the east coast at the time and was not involved in "opening for Jethro Tull." Felder joined The Eagles in 1974. Felder wrote essentially all the music to Hotel Califorina, including much of Joe Walsh's leads. Felder is one of the best guitarists in rock music history. For the record, Walsh is high up on the list as well.

Nobody except for the hard hard core fans care about felder being on the tour. 90% of the concert goers wont care or dont know who felder is in the first place. Enjoy the music and dont waste your time with dramatics life is to short. Let the eagles worry about the eagles

Frey treated Felder poorly. Felder may have asked for more than Frey thought was fair, but how much money does Frey really need? He ruined the Eagles. I will not pay to see the incomplete band play. Frey's true colors were clear to see in the history dvd. Ugly. Greed. Ego. Control freak. Did I mention ugly?

Memo

To: the ehhhh Eagles (i.e., Frey, Henley), Don Felder.

Work it out. Play together again. Record one more time - I agree with one poster, a pure 70'srecord.

In other words,

GET OVER IT.

They should have just renamed the band The Henley-Frey Band, Greedy bastards!.... Don Felder and Joe Walsh were the only rockers in the band.

Everyone owes it to themselves to hear Felder in his own words about the breakup. Don wasn't just a guitarist but a full partner in the band and by 1979 it was only he, Henley and Frey and the others were hired guns. Henley and Frey's super egos had run everyone off. Felder is a humble guy by comparison but his contributions were enormous. He didn't write just a 'chord progression' for Hotel Cali- He wrote all of the music from the intro samba beat/12 string, main figure and probably one of the most memorable solos of all time in the band's most recognizable tune. He had a part in 16 hits. He and Walsh transformed that country band to an Int'l sensation

Anonymous said...

After watching that documentary - there's no question that Henley and Fry are like Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons - in that band. It's all about the money.

Anonymous said...

Felder wrote one of the most iconic pieces of guitar music in rock history and because he was not psyched about doing a political benefit for a pinko, Alan Cranston, the band broke up. It's amazing that while Frey supports redistributionists like Cranston and Jerry Brown, he is awfully concerned with how much Felder was being paid for his contribution to the band. Frey's ego has eclipsed their collective legacy...

Anonymous said...

the eagles documentary laid bare the awful, mean spirited, souls of frey and henley. Seems pretty clear to any clear thinking observer that they are contol freeks. Felder, a gentle being, stood up to the bullying antics and was ambushed. smith and walsh are meer hired hands but should have backed felder at the time. They abandoned him rather than do the right thing. Very sad. the comment that felder only wrote a few chords for hotel california is contemptable. i suppose ignoranc e is bliss |

Anonymous said...

Don Felder is nothing without the Eagles? Well, that's not entirely true. Yes, the Eagles are more successful as a band than Felder is a solo artist but without Felder the Eagles are just like Kiss without Ace and Peter... nothing more than a novelty act.

Anonymous said...

Henley and Frey remind me of Ulrich and Hetfield.

Anonymous said...

Watching the documentary, it's obvious that the common factor in all the problems the band experinced was Glenn Frey. He fought with everybody... Glyn Johns, Bernie Leadon, Randy Meisner, and Don Felder, and was the sole reason all of those people parted with the Eagles. Glenn writes some great songs and sings well, but it's also painfully obvious that the guy has an over-inflated ego, an can be an a-hole to deal with, especially over any period of time.
I'd like to see Felder brought back as well, for at least some of the shows.

Anonymous said...

Glenn Frey seems proud to have bullied everyone out of the band, amazing isn't it - that 5'8 inch little runt running everyone else off, Felder should have kicked his a** in 1980 when Glen was just asking for it.. wimpy bunch of guys I guess? - go figure..

I think that Henley and Fry have a point. But we all know their personalities suck so who cares right? They did the heavy lifting the years of struggle and are in essence the band's core. Except that without the expertise of the others they would have never amounted to much more than a decent bar band.

Anonymous said...

Don Felder helped put the Eagles at the top. Fired for his contributions including "Hotel California". Frey/Henley's treatment of the versatile Bernie Leadon several years earlier foretold what awaited Meisner and Felder. No matter what Frey/Henley are paying the others, they've seized corporate control and are minimizing the contributions of others. I'd never pay to hear these *** again.

Anonymous said...

I truly feel that Felder had a significant influence on the Eagles music. But , that being said, its a business . And the release of Felder was a business decision. So what if Henley and Frey did reap more financial benefits. Its the same principle as professional football. The quarterback and running backs make more than the punter and kicker. They are however, part of the same team.

Niall Kelly said...

I love the Eagles. And no matter what anyone says Don Felder improved the Eagles sound and made them much more mainstream. A kick up the ass if you like! How Henley and Frey treated him was disgusting. He was fired because they didn't want Felder to see exactly what happening on the business side. He was a 1/3 shareholder and had every right to ask the questions he did. Plain and simple he was screwed over by two ego-maniacs and a manager. Irving Asof was supposed to be his manager!

Anonymous said...

To the anonymous who said Felder "Only" made the chord progression. That is NOT TRUE. He wrote ALL the music AND rhythm for the entire song. Henley and Frey added the lyrics and Joe Walsh and Felder made up the guitar solos at the end.
Before you speak, get the facts dunderhead.

Barbra said...

I'm staying out of the politics...I just want to know why they have skipped the San Francisco Bay Area on this massive tour....please come back here guys!

Mike G said...

Interesting that throughout the documentary Frey admitted to his failings - he wasn't good enough to play lead on the rock songs, (the whole reason for Felder's presence in the first place)he couldn't play fingerstyle country, he couldn't sing as well as Henley or Meisner. Crucially, he didn't write the centerpiece "Hotel California"- Henley wrote the lyric and Felder the music. Empty vessels-loud noises? I think so!

Every one of them has more $$$ than they could ever spend in 3 lifetimes, that includes Felder, wish somehow they could lay down the hatchets. If Felder is sincere about missing the music & relationships..... Then he should offer to play the tour for FREE..... Let Glen and Henley have all the $$$$....if he truly sincere about it was only about the music, and if Glen & Don really only care about $$$ then it would work.

Anonymous said...

Brilliant !!! ...... and true !! ..... I bet Bernie is getting paid nothing more than per diem...,. Just basic room, board, travel expenses and thats it. And Meisner was on the phone with Frey when Glen said "we want you to go on tour with us, but we only gonna pay ya room and board" Thats what caused him to choke and end up in hospital.

Anonymous said...

felder has tried many times to bury the hatchet but his calls to frey and henley are ignored. I mean come on guys, both are 65 and still acting like children. I refuse to go to the current "eagles" tour as it is a travesty. Bring back felder now !

Anonymous said...

I was sympathetic to Felder until I heard him describing how he packed gear into the van on tour with the Eagles in their early days. Really?!!! The Eagles had three albums out and half a dozen hits before Felder joined. They weren't lugging their own gear. He always sounds rehearsed when he speaks...same sob story. The band formed a corporation as a way of controlling their band as a business. It sounds like Felder now wants an equal cut for all Eagles work, regardless of his level of input into the material. It's a business, not a commune. Felder was no doubt well compensated for his contributions, which were significant, but there was an Eagles band before him and they're doing just fine without him. If Felder wanted to make amends, he shouldn't have sued. Don and Glen were right to move on without him. As an Eagles fan, I say, "Thanks, Mr. Felder...I guess."

Anonymous said...

To the dope who posted above me who said "Thanks Mr Felder...I guess. Did you watch the movie? Felder was a full partner in Eagles Ltd. He Leadon and Meisner and the Gods were paid the same. Leadon and Meisner left the band and sold their shares leaving Felder, Frey and Henley. They then tried to edge him out of his share which is not only greedy but a breach of contract of which Felder got a hefty compensation.

Folks,

Having written hits for the radio for about 20 years and having watched the Eagles documentary that you all keep referring to, I just want to say that there is no way on earth that Felder wrote the tune that carries the music in Hotel California. This is what both Henley and Frey claim and I believe as I have worked with guitar players enough in the past to know the difference between what they consider to be the "music" for a song and what real song writers consider to be the "music" for the song. Felder refers to the chord progression and structure as well as the riffs and solos, which are important but do not a song make. The real song is the melody that Mr. Henley sings. Felder was a welcome addition to the group but it is silly to compare his talent to that of Mr. Henley and Mr. Frey. I am sorry but there really is no comparison. And as for the rest of the stuff, I am sure that Henley and Frey were not sleeping when the band crafted the arrangement for the song. Another thing is this money issue, you cannot elevate each member of the band to equal status when it is so clear who the seminal members are. And as Henley put it in the documentary, no band can have five leaders. This is true. Whether somebody plays because of Felder or likes him as a person has no relevance to this. He is a great guitar player but let's not make him anything he is not. He received credit for participating in the writing of this classic. That proves that Henley and Frey are pretty fair. I am real iffy myself to allow credit for a riff or a chord progression if I wrote the stuff that really counts (Bill Wyman never received credit for Jumping Jack Flash), so in my book if Felder got credit for his bit and Walsh for just riff in "Life in the Fast Lane", I'd say we're talking about a pretty fair deal.

Weeks said...

In response to Tom, the fact is Felder wrote the music to Hotel California. Henley and Frye wrote the words. End of story. In fact, Felder even wrote some of Walsh's solo. They had a partnership and Frye and Henley broke it. As far as talent goes, Felder is more talented at playing the guitar than Henley or Frye are at singing (or playing drums/guitar). End of story on that one as well. Felder sued and it was settled out of court. Guess who "won" the settlement? Felder. All are talented and they made some great music together. But Henley and Frye are jerks. The Showtime documentary was an official sanctioned Eagle program. And Frye STILL comes off as an asshole. And it wasn't just Felder involved in the trouble with the Eagles. Frye and Henley despised each other so much when they broke up that not only would they not be in the same studio to edit the live album, they would not even be in the same part of the country. It had to be done via Fed Ex. You are obviously misinformed.

I've read all the comments and it comes down to personal opinion, and everybodies is different. The way I see it is this. Most rock artists are not Gods, although A lot of them think they are. Most rock musicians are better than average musicians or they wouldn't be in the bands they are in. Most rock musicians are overly rich spoiled brats making a living having fun while we go off to our offices or factories and work for a living making less in a lifetime than some musicians might make in a short period of time. Don Henely, Glenn Frey, and Don Felder are egotistical A--Holes, BUT I love their music. All I care about is having the access to play their music whenever I want. I love Hotel California and don't give a rats A-- who wrote it as long as I can listen to it. The Eagles Are the Eagles no matter who is currently in the touring band. All musicians who have been in the Eagles has left their mark, although I'm still trying to find Timothy B. Schimdt's, but it must be there somewhere ! Anyway, my thoughts are enjoy their music, and there is a ton of it, and don't worry about the jerks and A--holes. There are a lot of Gentlemen Musicians out there who are the nicest people you would ever want to meet, but we don't know them because they just didn't make it.

The most difficult job for a band is to come up with great songs. What makes a great song is a great melody. A great lyric can elevate a song, but is not essential. What makes a great band is great melodies sung by great, memorable voices. You have these things, you have the cake. The instrumentation is the icing, the finish, the trim. Lots and lots of folks are great players, what's rare is a great songwriter, what's rarer still is a great voice. What made the Eagles were the great melodies and in particular, the gift of Don Henley's fabulous, memorable, one-in-a-million voice. Anyone who understands pop musice - or music period - gets this.

Anonymous said...

Why don't the Eagles get Don Felder back and do a "great 70's style album"? Because with or without Felder, they're not capable of it anymore. This is not a put-down, but rather acknowledgement of the fact that for those very few artists who achieve a level of genius in their genre, the window only is only open for a brief period, ten years usually the outside max, often much shorter. Most only have one or two truly great works in them. Who knows what happens? Circumstance, maybe even changes in the brain as one matures, staleness... "Eden" would have been a great album if the Eagles were on top of their game and still capable of genius. Instead, they produced a double album of filler, one or two good songs, nothing great, much of it not even worth recording, some of it quite dreadful. This is why their act is about their '70's catalogue. That was their period of genius. And it was over before they did "Long Run."

Anonymous said...

If you want to know how mercenary the Eagles became in their later days, all the evidence you need is their deal with WalMart. WalMart represents much of what Henley at least railed against all his career. Then his band makes a deal with them. It's not about giving the fans twice the songs for $12. The fans would happily pay $24 for a double album. In their defense, most men loose their idealism as they get older and it becomes much more about the last big paycheque. They are not unique in this regard. Shit, America is going down the shitter. This is their last chance on a far grander level than most realize.

Anonymous said...

The talented ones should get together and make an album without Henley and Frey, I would buy that one

Felder's sound was the soul of The Eagles.

Anonymous said...

Some people may hate me for this, but in my own greedy, selfish way, I am glad that Felder was kicked out just because without that, we would have never seen what Stewart could bring to the band's live (and studio, so I've heard) performance. Don't get me wrong, Felder is a excellent guitarist as well as one of the reason's I began my career as a guitarist. And although my tastes have moved to heavier, more technical places, such as Rush, Yes, and even light progressive metal, I still get nostalgic when I hear the Eagles, and I love them to death. Hotel California was the first guitar solo I ever learned. So I love Felder, but Stewart's playing is incredible too. He is, perhaps, the superior musician out of the front line of musicians at their live show. Timothy's bass playing is right on too, in the pocket where it belongs. I actually thing Don and Glen's instrumentalism and musicianship is the weakest in the group, but they are the songwriters, the idealists, and essentially the heart of the Eagles. Also, vocally, they are at the top of their game. They are selfish, money-thirsty pricks though. I wish Randy had been well for this tour, and that they could have made amends with Felder just long enough to play a 3 hour concert every night, then stay out of sight of each other on the road. We all know Glen and Don Henley hated each other for nearly 15 years, and they finally made up and now consider themselves friends. Anyway, just my humble thoughts.

Just finished watching the video, which is pretty informative by the way. You don't see the band through rose colored glasses. But I can provide a little insight I believe. For one, I saw the Eagles back in 1973 or 74 with Randy and Bernie. They were a great band then (minus anything from Don Felder yet). I saw them a few years ago on tour, when they were wearing suits. They were great and had a much larger repertoire to draw from. Additionally, I am a musician by hobby and have played in bands off and on for many years, primarily playing guitar, although I started out on bass. The most important thing to making a band better than average is the singing in the band. If you have one or more good vocalists you are ahead of the pack. The next really important thing is to have great material to perform and in my mind, a great song starts and ends with a great melody if you have singing in your group. Everything else i secondary. Henley has a phenomenal and very memorable voice. Meisner and Schmidt have very reconizable voices that are exceptional in several ways. Frey is a good singer and Walsh has a unique voice as well. Felder may be a competent harmony singer but that is about it I think.
However, Frey and Henley wrote the vast bulk of Eagles songs, sometimes with other collaboraters. They are truly the reason for the existence of the band and for its longevity. They might be pricks in some peoples' minds but they were able to keep the band together and successful for so many years. It is extremely hard to such a task, so they have to be commended somewhat because one or both of them were driven to do that, and as a result we have some truly memorable music to enjoy. Felder is a great guitarist, but in my mind he is a "hired gun" and he probably overstepped his bounds by demanding equal pay.(begin the slings and arrows here I guess. Bottom line, the Eagles were great before Felder and they are great post-Felder. It would be nice if all could play nice but it is not in the cards. I think it is great that Bernie will play with them one last time and wish Randy could too but for his health. We have been witness to a remarkable assembly of talent in the Eagles, but without Henley and Frey it would never have happened no matter how much people wish to extol the virtues of Felder's contribution.

Speaking as a musician who has played in bands for nearly 40 years I can say that the most accurate comment from the Showtime movie was made by T.B. Schmidt when he said that all bands are on the verge of breaking up. It's extremely rare to find four or five guys or gals that can't put away ego's for the sake of the music. I agree that this is all a matter of one's opinion but I have to say that it is painfully obvious who's ego did in a great band. Now all we are hearing is a bunch of good music played by musicians who don't need the money but see money as the sole driving force. I can enjoy the real magic by listening to the vinyl records and not paying $94.00 to $1200.00 per ticket, or feel the vibe when I'm on stage. I don't know what the answer is. I think that this band got screwed up terribly in the mid to late 80"s.

The eagles will be the eagles without felder but...the eagles guitar sounds were the work of felders talent. There would be no hotel california without him and that's the truth. I love the eagles, but seriously they are one unit together so they shouldv got paid all as partners the same way.

Frank Ramos said...

Henley is cool, Glen frey on the other hand is the greedy shithead that thinks him and henley should get paid more than the other band members. Plus the fact that he's an asshole for getting rid of Felder due to his greed.

You know what your talking about bro, Felder is one of the greatest guitarest and was an important member of that band.

Don and Glen were the songwriting team and brains behind the Eagles! Yes, Felder is talented along with Joe and Timothy! Don and Glen did most of the hard work....don't forget that! The Eagles.... My favorite group ever!

Felder? Who is Felder?

Long Road Out of Eden bores me to death. Their forte was hormone stimulation, not social commentary. That's what happens when you become old, fat and rich: you begin to think you're a philosopher or a moralist. A lot of movie stars have that problem, particularly as regards politics.

The Eagles without Randy Meisner seems incomplete. He was the heart of the band.

When someone asks you what song do you remember most of the eagles and 95% will say Hotel California. Without Hotel California you forget who the eagles are. This song kept their memory alive while they were gone for 14 years. You don't compare them to a football team when it comes to pay level. Partners in most businesses do not do equal contributions but a partnership is just that, a partnership. Two guys have egos and will die with egos. Thanks Don Felder for being like most of whom we admire and for standing up for what you felt was right. And thanks Don for taking Joe to rehab because Frey and Henley seem a little too busy with their egos.I think the song Get Over It was written for Frey and Henley because they seem to complain a lot. They are all great musicians and that's how Glen wants to be recognized as. Not as a decent person.

Ultimately, neither The Eagles or Don Felder are as good separately as they are together. Felder's absence is detrimental to the instrumental sound and texture of The Eagles' "Long Road Out of Eden".

As for Felder's new solo album "Road To Forever", it is a tremendous improvement over his early 1980's solo recordings. On the earlier recordings, Felder's vocals were a gutteral raspy growl. On the new album, the growl is gone. His voice is now competent, but hoarse. It's a voice that's O.K. for an occasional song, but over the course of an entire album(and I've got the 14-song Japan pressing and the exclusive iTunes bonus track), it gets tiresome.

You have to understand why Joe Walsh & Timothy B.Schmitt don't have the same grievances as Don Felder: Walsh & Schmitt were always employees. Felder was a shareholder, until Henley & Frey formed a new corporation(not including Felder) to demote Felder from shareholder to employee. No wonder Felder took Henley & Frey to court.

Every band has a leader or two. The Stones had Keith and Mick, Led Zeppelin had Jimmy, CSN had Steven and The Eagles has Frey and Henley. That's why there is always friction in bands. But it sounds like Felder was compensated very well financially and doesn't really care to work with Frey and Henley. It's a shame because they were so good together but that's rock and roll!

I agree totally with you Jaynee, younger people tend to overlook Meissner and his contribution.. give Timothy his due, but he replaced him in Poco as well the Eagles. I don't hear him kickin the high notes in Take it to the Limit.

Saw the Eagles "History of the Eagles Tour" concert last night in Sacramento.

While their sound is as good as ever (maybe better), my favorite rendition of "Hotel California" is on their "Hell Freezes Over" album, featuring Don Felder.

Felder was and is a brilliant guitarist. and that's where his greatest talent lies.

One thought Don Henley and Glenn Frey could think about the eagles fans and make the Last tour about us. Bring back ALL the Eagle and for this one tour. Put everything aside and pay everyone the same. This would be a way to thank the founding members as well as present and maybe mend fences with other members. It would also show the their fans they care. I for one would love to see ALL of the Eagles play a concert together. What a night that would be, what a tour that would be

Look.. Don Felder got PAID!! Big time int he Lawsuit!! I think he will get a percentage of the gross earnings from Eagles LTD for a very long time.

If you look each band member net worth.. They rank like this:

-Henely: 200 Mill
-Walsh : 120 Mill
-Felder : 65 Mill
-Frey : 24 Mill
-Schimt: 15 mill

I saw the Eagles at the MGM Grand Garden Arena last night in Las Vegas and with or without Don its a show that you would not want to miss. It was great.

Walsh is not a member of the Eagles. He is still hired as a fill in musician. Sure Henley and Frey started the Eagles and wrote great songs, but when they hired Felder, he signed a contract that made him part of the Eagles corp. He is legally entitled to his share of the Eagles $$$ that's how it works. So all you dumb ass know it alls many bands have fights. And all I know is Felder is a hell of a player and he'll be fine. Joe Walsh makes the Eagles good and the very un talked about Steuart Smith who is now playing lead with Joe Walsh is doing an outstanding job. So when you see Walsh and Smith playing the dynamic lead on Hotel Cal. remind yourself they are not any part of the Eagles corp.

Went to the eagles at the MGM, don't waste your money it was dire, they are a great bar band full stop

So many people are making it sound like the Eagles without Don Felder is doing just fine. Keep in mind that since 1979 they have not had a major hit, and are just rehashing the old playlist that people of the 70's/80"s really love. Sure on the HFO tour they came up with a few new songs, and Felder came up with the arraignment of a new intro into the Hotel California intro as well as acoustic melodies. When you watch Walsh now playing with hired guitarist Smith, it is sad. Not because Smith is a poor player, but he is no Don Felder. So unlike when Walsh and Felder pushed/challenged each other to one up it, Walsh now just tries to allow Smith to keep pace with him. People who don't play or don't appreciate the nuance in music are blissfully ignorant, but others see a HUGE difference.

Even though Don Felder was not given credit on the album, he wrote much of the music for One Of These Nights, including all guitar parts and the total bass chords. Randy Meisner was home and not able to participate so Felder taught him all his parts upon rejoining the band. Until then, Frey and Henley had the musiprogressionon as a piano based song, but Felder suggested what we hear today. What other major song has such a great bass into and progression, yet his name does not appear as a contributer of that incredible song.

Say what you will, about the Eagles success prior to Felder joining, some of which will be true. However no one can discount the fact that Frey and Henley sought him out to add something to the group, which helped them achieve the lofty status they now enjoy as a group.

I have always wanted to be able to not live paycheck to paycheck or have any debt. I worked in accounting for about 20 years and was barely able to make ends meet. It seemed like any time I moved up in the company and received a raise, my living expenses would go up significantly and I was never able to get ahead. lottery spells. Then one day my best friend told me the truth about what he did when his wife left him. He had a love spell cast and she stopped the divorce proceedings and they got back together. When he told me this I asked who he used and he gave me their email address which is:okutemple@hotmail.com and I immediately contacted them for help. I saw that they offered different kinds of money spells to help win the lottery. I was immediately intrigued. I have always felt like I was going to win the lottery someday. I had the jackpot lottery spell cast and awaited my win. I was told to play the lottery each week and I did what I was told. I played the lottery each week anyways, so it did not change anything. Within about two weeks it happened. I won $100,000!! I could not believe it! It was not enough money to retire right away, but I invested it well and it has allowed me to go down to part time work and will help me retire much earlier. I am eternally grateful for finding their email address:okutemple@hotmail.com

I used to think Felder was a poor victim until I saw him in concert last week. Great show but what a bullshitter! Said he was in the Eagles for 27 years although they were broken up for 14 of those years. He introduced many songs as if he wrote them without actually saying so. Having heard his obvious stretching of the truth I would tend to believe Frey and Henley's version of the past. They don't have to exaggerate their contributions. Anyone but those 2 can be relaced and with a net worth of over 50 million I would say Felder was more than adequately compensated.

"They cant even sell out shows " - what a load of rubbish - every UK tour has been a sell out .
Don Felder is worth around $50 million , Frey around $70 million and Schmit about $15 million, Felder was carping about the split of money in the band from TOURING , no one ever took away his song writers royalties which he will still receive . He carped so much that no-one in the band, and that includes Schmit and Walsh, could bear working with him, Felder isolated himself , from his fellow bandmates - he made the mistake of thinking he was irreplaceable and discovered that he wasn't , the hard way . Bernie Leadon has been a joy on this tour - Randy Meisner would have been along for the ride if he was well, but I would imagine that hell truly would freeze over if Felder ever got to play with them again, I don't blame them one little bit - I can admire Felders talent for writing chord progressions and as a guitarist , but his voice isn't great and he doesn't have the charisma to be a front man . And in any case , what has it actually got to do with anyone other than the people concerned ?

Too many ignorant people is why Felder will struggle and Henley/Frey will prevail. The intelligent person knows better.

i've seen all the interviews about the band and the breakups, i am "with" all the other contributors when they say Glen Frey is the wrecker of the eagles. we wait long and hard for "hell freezes over", which was well worth waiting for, now that Don Felder is no longer with the band , it just ain't the same. the concert i saw in melbourne ,which was their "last" just didn't do it for me. way too much orchestration and brass, they had lost themselves and were making up for it by including the "big brassy" sound. just thinking though....... wouldn't it be great if ALL the eagles could get together , frey, henley, smit, leaden, meisner, felder and joe..watch a rage

Glen Frey is the jerk. In the Hell Freezes Over tour that I attended in Las Cruces, New Mexico, he was the one who told those up front by the stage to "sit down or I'm leaving"! Felder is fantastic guitar player and niether Frey nor Walsh can master what he did. Time for them to retire for good!

I watched the documentary and then read Don Felder's book right after. I sent an e-mail to Don the morning after I finished the book telling him that I enjoyed it and the music he collaborated on with the Eagles and he responded to me immediately. His point in the book and to me was how difficult Frey was in that he was the third Eagle who left after confrontation with him. In my view, the problem is a universal one which crops up in human relations all the time... Adults in such close quarters constantly - such as in marriage - will undoubtably have differences. The question is can they communicate well enough to overcome them? Is there enough of an incentive, such as children? For the Eagles, the answer was no. Ultimately, I see both positions- Frey was obviously a tough individual to deal with. At the same time the Eagles were the idea of Frey and Henley and they are that groups backbone and deserved the most money. There has always been more than enough to go around and I wish they all- including Meisner and Leadon - had been able to just communicate better. I'd love nothing more than to see a new throwback album and tour with all of them- Meisner's health willing. Now that would be the way to wrap it up! Do it guys, the Beatles never did get the chance....

Just got back from a Styx/ Foreigner concert in Upstate N.Y. The opener was. Don Felder. The music was great, the vocals were ok. I didn't care for his slams against the "Seagulls " as he kept referring. You got a lot of money Don, grow up! Remember, you were a "Seagull" for a long time! I love the 70's Eagles and always will.

Obviously, all the guys that have played as The Eagles are great, or you would not see so many comments. I believe that the group would never have come into being if Glen Frey had not been truly dedicated to developing a good band. His enthusiasm touched the other members as they began to have success. I think that Don Henley's success as a fine vocalist elevated his position in the eyes of Frey.
The fact that Frey had difficulty
with Leadon was that Bernie really
preferred developing a different
type of music. I think that he was happy to leave when he did. I did not realize that Randy M. did not feel well, and I'm not aware of what Glen knew about it. At any rate, Glen was knowledgeable
about what the band needed, and he found Joe, Don Felder, Mr. Schmidt and Mr. Stewart. They all were fabulous choices. I think we all as fans need to remember that these people began as kids with little behind them.
They were not aware of organizational formats that should have been in place. Success came early for them, and early agreements (which had no end dates, or review dates) just died. The problem was that a person such as Don Feldon took those agreements very seriously. Thus, the seeds for later trouble were sown. It is too bad that there has been fallout, but fans, instead of being critical of some of these super talented people, we should simply recall all the hours of pleasure that these fellows have provided us with, in spite of their own human feelings and desires. All the members of The Eagles have just been super. If you feel that any of them are egotistical, I say, they deserve that right! Ask yourselves what you have oontributed to make all of our lives more enjoyable!!

It sounds to me that Don Felder was a great member of the Eagles. It seems as if Don Henley and Glenn Fry were asshole control freaks, and in the end they screwed Don Felder. Shame on those two jerks! Don Felder is legendary! He deserves the royalties to be paid out equally.

What is great is Henley and Frey both made themselves look like assholes in the documentary they controlled and filmed. I love The Eagles and being a guitar player myself I obviously admire Felder. It's just now I like him a little more than the assholes. If Frey practiced guitar a little more The Eagles would of not needed Felder but history cannot be changed and The Eagles in my book are not complete without Don Felder.

Scott Douglas said...

In my opinion the heart of the matter between Frey, Henley and Felder is simply that the great song writing team of Henley and Frey did not create the (arguably) greatest Eagles song, Hotel California, Don Felder did. Surely non of this can really be about the money but about going down in history as first credit on this iconic song. The fact that the song writing credits were changed from Felder, Frey and Henley to Frey, Henley and Felder says it all I think.

Scott Douglas said...

Incidentally, those credits on the song Hotel California were changed back as a result of the Felder lawsuit and history wasn't rewritten after all.

No matter what anyone says, any musician who ever played with The Eagles has made an imprint on the soul and essence of the band. People have fought over money since the beginning of time and will continue to do so. So sit back, put some Eagles tunes on the stereo, close your eyes
and let the music take you back to a place when you were young and free and you thought the music really was all about the music.:-)

Both Henley and Fry are fools for firing Don Felder. They figured they had enough fitting between themselves so there was no way they had time for a third person. Spoiled babies that want it all.

I would like to say that I have been an Eagles's fan for a long time. I think they are all talented musicians, songwriters, and singers. I do have to say that my favorite eagles song isn't hotel California ,even though that is a great song. My favorite song is Take it to the limit. The band isn't the same to me without Randy Meisner's awesome high harmony. I would have liked to have seen him back with the band. He didn't do anything wrong but have some health issues and need a break, back in the 70's They should have asked him back for the reunion tour. I really don't understand why The Eagles didn't. Well anyway it' has been along time. I hear they may retire. They are awesome and I love to still listen to they're music. They are all legends in my opinion and apart of rock n roll history. All 7 of them.

Just saw the History of the Eagles tonight in Salt Lake City. Truly an awesome experience! Almost three concerts in one: James Gang, Joe Walsh solo and the Eagles. I'm a Joe Walsh fan first and an Eagles fan second. While I agree Don Felder is a great guitarist and a huge contributor to the Eagles, Joe is ten times the guitarist. It was Joe who pushed Felder and drove the Eagles' rock sound. Nonetheless, I find it sad that grown (and very wealthy) men can't get along and set aside their differences over money and fame. By the way, Randy was indeed invited to join this tour, but due to health issues could not accept the invitation. It was great to see Bernie with the band!

The thing is Felder signed agreement to get less dosh when reuniting for HFO. If he had had another deal in the 70s that's another matter, after HFO he was just a hired hand. His moaning about being paid less doesn't hold water.
I agree with assumption that everybody should be paid royalties according to their participation in any given song.
It is Glenn Frey who started the band, cared about the band, hired Felder, hired Walsh, hired Schmidt and dissolved the whole thing in 1980. Felder wanted to go on but as Henley said it was a ridiculous suggestion.
Having said that Eagles don't sound the same without Felder. They lost the edge, they mellowed too much. Maybe they are too old now, Henley saying it might be their last outing.
The Eagles are dead. Long live The Eagles.
