Review: Madonna Does the Super Bowl

Elton John got it right last week when he told Madonna to "lip-synch good" because that's exactly what she did during the specticle of her half-time show at the Super Bowl. There were Roman centurions, cheerleaders, dancers, a lot of flashing lights and one limber legend who only really flubbed the dance routines once and missed the synching of her lips with the music a couple of more times.

Madonna entered being pulled in by said centurions before climbing on the stage to the opening strains of Vogue.  After a shortened version of the song (a Super Bowl tradition considering most pack a minimum of four songs into the 12-minute slot) she moved into her 2000 hit Music which included an appearance by LMFAO who mixed in lines from their hits Party Rock Anthem and Sexy and I Know It.

Then came the best reason for Madonna to have agreed to the performance, the performance of her new single Give Me All Your Lovin' with help from rappers Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. The song is striking in the number of times it name drops the singer, something that's rarely been heard since, well, Ms. Minaj dropped her own name in her hit Super Bass.

Finally, a marching band came on the stage with none other than Cee-Lo Green as the drum major. He and Madonna dropped a couple of lines from Open Your Heart and Express Yourself before a choir entered for a performance of Like a Prayer.

Was it a performance to go down in history? No, not really. Madonna seemed a bit detached from the proceedings early on and it is really questionable why she felt the need to pile so many guests into such a short slot. Overall, the performance couldn't shine a light to Prince or Springsteen, but it was certainly a lot better than last year's Black Eyed Peas show or the return of Up With People.

Are you kidding? The performance was just that, a performance to be remembered. It wasn't good, it was EPIC. Sure she lipsynced but so do other legends at the Superbowl, Michael Jackson being one of them. She's 53 and puts artists (cough Britney, Katy Perry, Rihanna) half her age to shame. Madonna has never been the best singer or dancer but she is the greatest entertainer after MJ and a brillant songwriter when it comes to hooks. Not a fan of the new song but her classics top any other female in the biz. Love this performance.

I have to agree with the previous commentator. I've followed Madonna for a long time and although I haven't liked everything she's ever done, this was a masterful performance and entertainment at its very best. The vocals, though dubbed, were newer and not off the albums. There's no real way to sing live at these things anymore anyway. She looked incredible, the visuals were impeccable and a feast for the eyes, and that stage was out of this world. She wasn't detached, there was no attitude; she was actually generous and open-hearted with her performance and looked like she was having a great time. The flaws were minor and did not take away from the impact of the show. It was good to see American Madonna again!

She let Elton have it on SuperBowl Sunday and over 110 million people in the USA and who knows how many more everywhere else in the world. Someone as bitter as Elton could not possibly forgive her for that. Even if he did, it would not be Sincere because he will always remember that every Super Bowl from now on....I was enntertained from start to finish...

I agree with the comments here the performance was one of a kind. Madonna was fantastic, sure the world peace was cliche, but NBC wouldn't allowed her to use the graphix "marriage equality" I am sure. As for one poster saying her dancing was never the greatest. She is a fantastic dancer and inspired me to go into dance. Imagine a white girl from Michigan inspiring a black man to go into African dance classes. Madonna scored a career highlight with this performance and portions of Music, Vogue and all of Like a prayer were live vocals. Frankly I don't even remember MJ at the Superbowl his performance was so forgettable.
