Jerry Butler Honored for 25 Years of Public Service

Butler's Cook County Portrait
You may know him for such classics as He Will Break Your Heart, Hey Western Union Man and Only the Strong Survive but in Cook County, IL, they've known him for the last 25 years as Mr. Commissioner.

Jerry Butler was honored on Thursday by the Cook County Board for his quarter-century of service and, according to reports, his fellow board members acted more like fans than colleagues. During the presentation, there were many, many pictures taken and one member even asked him to sing a song (Butler jokingly refused, saying she was just "trying to get a free show."

The group also asked Butler to read his own resolution, but he said he would rather not. "It would be like reading my own obituary."

Butler has represented the 3rd district of Cook County (south side of Chicago) since 1986 and is committee chair for health and hospitals and vice-chair for capitol improvements.
