Peter Schekeryk, Husband & Producer for Melanie, Passes Away

by VVN Music

Beautiful People: The Greatest Hits of MelaniePeter Schekeryk, who was the husband of singer Melanie for 45 years and the producer of all but one of her albums, passed away on Wednesday, October 26 while shopping in Framingham, MA.  He was 74.

Melanie writes eloquently in her own journal about her husband's passing, the circumstances of finding out about his death, the talk she had with the Best Buy employee who was helping him when he became ill and a planned book.
So Peter wanted me to write a book and I never could start or rather, I could start and never continue. He even brought along a leather bound book so I could.

"Melanie, I love you. I would give up my life for you. Write it, Melanie, please, I love the way you write."

I never saw it was Peter who was the story, the book. It will be Peter’s story, immigrant refugee to number one producer of Melanie, the love of his life. That crazy Peter, sometimes you can’t see it’s a story 'till it ends, the greatest love story never told.
Yesterday, Melanie asked people around the world to listen to her song Beautiful People in memory of Schekeryk at 4 PM ET.

He is survived by his wife and their children Beau Jarred, Jeordie and Leilah.

Peter was a great producer for Melanie. It was his fault (or should I say, blessing) Melanie got streotyped as a bubblegum artist with his production of Melanies #1 hit "Brand new key". He knew he could make it a hit with his fun rendition. Melanie wanted it to be produced as a Leon redbone type blues song. It wasn't the only hit he produced for his beautiful wife. "Lay Down","Look what they done to my song Ma"and,"Ruby Tuesday", just to name a few. Peter was a rebel with one cause, promoting Melanie. He helped her start her own record company (Neighborhood records) in 1972 when, it was never of a woman owning he own company. Peter was a gyspe leading the pied piper of folk-rock (Melanie) to the top of the charts. I will miss him.

Peter was 68 years old, not 74. He was born in 1942.

It's a shame people wrote Melanie off as a bubblegum performer based on "Brand New Key." Listen to so many other tracks and you'd hear a thoughtful, talented wordsmith with a fabulously unique voice that nicely matched Peter Schekeryk's creative contributions on the production side. A partnership of 45 years...that's a rarity ANYWHERE today, not just for show business. Sorry to hear about his passing and the end of their moving love story.

"Brand New Key" was only a small dimension of MELANIE SAFKA & PETER SCHEKERYK...a brilliant monster hit single that proves they were gifted for producing Top 40 pop hits with impeccable talent. Melanie was never a bubble-gum artist. The majority of her "hits" and key LP tracks became radio staples during the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s. You still hear her two most famous hits on 70s pop-rock/adult contemporary radio stations. People just never paid attention, but, occasionally, you'd hear Melanie's music ["Ring The Living Bell"/"Bitter Bad"/"Candles In The Rain-Lay Down"/"Peace Will Come"/"Beautiful People"/other Lp tracks-etc.] on FM Radio's album oriented rock stations(AOR) alongside tracks by Fairport Convention, Dan Fogelberg, The Pentangle, Linda Ronstadt, Renaissance, CSN, Jefferson Airplane,Steeleye Span, etc. Just because an artist produces a # 1 Pop Single with a catchy chorus, doesn't make her "Bubble-Gum" schlock. Melanie is supremely talented. Nothing wrong with 'bubble-gum music' either - a record company's gotta have the hits to make $$$ to fund their developing artists, stay in business. In Melanie & Peter's case - they proved their former record label that quality of music is more important, and DIY was pioneered by the Safka-Schekeryks! DIY - Indie labels became phenomenal! Thank You Melanie & Peter!

Peter was a bum, who forced women who worked for him to have sex with him to keep their jobs...then he stole money from them. He played on their love of Melanie to steal their virtue and their money.

Good Ridance.

Peter and Melanie came to a studio I was working at in the 80's. They stole their master tapes and snuck out in the middle of the night without paying their bill. Schekeryk was a no-talent liar and a thief riding on Melanie's coat tails. Melanie herself lucked out in the business by getting over on two ridiculous novelty songs.

You anonymous posters are disgusting leeches and scum. Melanie is a wonderful beautiful person as was Peter. Why don't you follow the old saying " if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all

Love you Melanie and RIP Peter.

As Jeff Lynne himself is fond of saying, "it wasn't until George Martin and The Beatles that people knew how important the producer's role was in creating the final sound." It was he who had the pulse of the market so keenly understood when "Brand New Key"'s direction was determined by him. That he was "smitten" with a such a special artist only validates his sensibilities, and where his values lie. You've done the Ukraine proud, Peter!

I had a disagreement with Peter Schekeryk at a Melanie concert in London in June, 1974.He told me he would beat me and I would require hospital treatment.I was terrified.Schekeryk was a misfit and a bum.

It is easy to speak ill of the dead because they can no longer defend themselves.
To do so anonymously speaks volumes about the people who do.

Pete had great dreams as a young man in Atlantic City in the sixties. He met the love of his life and left the world 3 wonderful musicians. Pete's Dad would have been very proud of him. He made it with you Melanie and had his Dreams come true. Beau you look so much like your Dad when he was your age. Wishing you all success and maybe if your in Philly we can meet up. Take Care and God Bless. Anne Zaliwciw - Czajka.

Melanie has influenced the voices of so many incredible female vocalists, Emiliana Torrini and I would venture to say Martha Wainwright among current vocalists. She was an incredible songwriter and vocalist. Her voice was magic. I'm watching old melanie tracks on youtube now and wondering why she is not ever recognized as the great talent she was. Perhaps her husband was some gangsta type. I don't know. I just hope such a wonderful talent did experience joy since she gave musicians and female musicians such an aspiration and icon to emulate.

Melanie is and was an influence on so many vocalists. I love Martha Wainwright and Emiliana Torrini who were both influenced by Melanie but its all the girls and women and friends and songwriters I've known in my life who talk about how they love listening to Melanie. That is a legacy after 40 years. Melanie is such beautiful soul and always has been. I hope she realizes the influence she has had on so many generations of musicians and music listeners period.
