Divinyls Singer Chrissy Amphlett Battling Breast Cancer

Chrissy Amphlett, the lead singer for the Australian group the Divinyls, has told the press that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Amphlett, one of Australia’s most dynamic female vocalists, lives in New York with husband Charlie Drayton. Several years ago she was also diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.  The 51-year old rock star told the Canberra Times that the MS has made the treatment for the cancer “more difficult”.

Chrissy’s sister is also a breast cancer survivor. She is also the cousin of Australian 60s pop star Little Pattie.

Divinyls were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2006 and had a very brief reformation at that time. They originally formed in 1980 and rose to fame in 1982 when director Ken Cameron used their music for the soundtrack of Monkey Grip. Their first two hits Boys In Town and Only Lonely were from that movie.

Throughout the 80s and 90s, Divinyls were one of Australia’s most successful rock acts with hits like Good Die Young, Pleasure and Pain, Back To The Wall and Science Fiction.  In 1990, they cracked the USA with the no. 4 Billboard hit I Touch Myself. The hits continued after that with I Ain’t Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore and I’m Jealous.

In 2007, they reformed for the ARIA Award and recorded one more song Don’t Wanna Do This.

Chrissy has also performed on stage. She starred alongside Russell Crowe in Blood Brothers and played Judy Garland in The Boy From Oz.
