One of the great voices of the last fifty years, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Mavis Staples, releases her new album You Are Not Alone on September 14 via Anti Records. The album mixes traditional gospel with interpretations of songs by artists like Randy Newman, Allen Toussaint, John Fogerty and Little Milton. In addition, there are two new songs written by the album's producer, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco.
The album is Staples' second for Anti, following up her 2007 release We'll Never Turn Back. That album focused on the great songs of the civil rights movement.
Staples band of three years with Rick Holmstrom (guitar, vocals), Jeff Turmes (bass, vocals), Stephen Hodges (drums) and Donny Gerrard (background vocals) join her on the record. Special guests include Jeff Tweedy (guitars, bass, and vocals), Wilco’s Patrick Sansone (keys, vibes), Mark Greenberg (vibes, keys) and additional background vocals by frequent Neko Case collaborators Kelly Hogan and Nora O’Connor, and Richard Parenti.
