Rhino Releasing Amazing 6-CD Woodstock: 40 Years On

Rhino Records has announced an August 18 release date for a major updating of the classic Woodstock soundtrack album.

Originally released in 1970 by Cotillion as a 3-CD set, the original soundtrack for the movie sold millions and went to number one on the pop album chart (19 on the R&B album chart). While it was billed as a soundtrack album, there were performances in the movie that didn't make the album and album tracks not in the movie. The real purpose was to give a retrospective of the festival including songs by many of the major acts and a lot of the stage announcements and crowd chants.

What was missing from that original album, though, were artists who played the festival but never found huge popularity (Sweetwater, Quill) along with a few huge artists that weren't included because of artistic decisions and licensing problems (i.e., Creedence Clearwater Revival, Blood Sweat and Tears).

The six-CD Woodstock - 40 Years On: Back to Yasgur's Farm tries to alleviate those problems by presenting more artists along with additional music from performers that were included the first time around. Still missing, though, are any songs by The Keef Hartley Band, Ten Years After and The Band who all would not clear their performances. The loss of Ten Years After's Goin' Home, to us, is a real loss as Alvin Lee's blistering guitar was one of the highlights of the album.

What you do get is 77-tracks sequenced in chronological order from Richie Haven's opening set on Friday afternoon to Hendrix' closer early on Monday morning. The production team also concentrated on full-length versions of songs instead of edits like on the earlier releases. That includes all of the Who's We're Not Going to Take It, a 30-minute Woodstock Boogie by Canned Heat and a 19-minute version of Dark Star by the Grateful Dead.

Replaced on the album are two performances where tapes from other shows were originally used, Arlo Guthrie's Coming Into Los Angeles and Mountain's Theme From An Imaginary Western (originally on the Woodstock 2 album).

Rhino VP Cheryl Pawelski told Billboard, "This will be the most comprehensive collection of Woodstock music yet. The goal was to make it as real as possible...as authentic an experience as possible. It feels like dirt. It feels like a field. We wanted to take you there. We worked very hard to make it a true document of that time."
