ABBA's Mamma Mia Becomes Biggest Film In U.K. History

Some records just weren't meant to be broken. Well, that's not totally true. Eventually, just about every one falls, but only after a long, storied history.

That's the way it was with Titanic. The huge film still holds the all-time box office record in the U.S., $70 million ahead of number 2, The Dark Knight, but in England the huge ship has been defeated.

The movie of the ABBA musical, Mamma Mia!, has just become the all-time box office champ in the United Kingdom, taking in $105.8 million to Titanic's $105.7 million.

There had been some question as to whether the movie would actually achieve the record after it was still short when the DVD was released, but a few remaining theater showings in combination with its two Golden Globe nominations was enough to push it over the top.

No records will be falling in the U.S., though, as the movie has taken in $143.8 million, placing it as the 186th biggest film in U.S. movie history.
