Ginger Baker Says No More Cream Reunions

Ginger Baker was interviewed in the latest issue of England's Rhythm magazine and talked a bit about what happened during the 2005 Cream reunion shows.

"The Albert Hall was great but not the shows we did at Madison Square Garden in New York later that year. That was a fucking disaster.

"I'd refused to do it first of all. It was Eric who phoned me up and convinced me. The reason I didn't want to do it was because of what happened in New York in 1968 when the magic was destroyed. The reason why we broke up in the first place re-emerged on stage at Madison Square.

"You'll notice I'm talking about Eric in a nice way, but there was another person in the group. It wasn't just a problem with the volume of the bass guitar, it was the problem of being humiliated in front of 20,000 people.

"Jack Bruce has apologized many times since, but he's been doing that to me ever since I first played with him. He gets tearful and says 'I love you man' but the volume thing has damaged my hearing to this day. I just cannot play with other people playing too loud on stage. It's too painful."

When asked if he'd do it again, he said "No, we won't."

I was at the 2nd MSG show and was absolutly blown away.I have been a Cream fan since my early teens (early 1980's)so there was no way I was going to miss a reunion show.I expected the worst and for them to perform with extra musicians (guitarist, keyboardist, etc)ala the Stones. I have read reveiws stating EC's playing was uninspired,I have seen EC many times and found his playing that night to be the best I've witnessed. Without the burdeon of being the front man his solo's reached the hights of his late 60's playing. I did not notice the fighting that has been reported and rate the show as one of the best I have ever seen.
